Welcome to Family in the Media! A blog about how representations of various families in the media affect the public's view on diversity. We will be looking at many aspects of diverse families in the media, as portrayed on television, and how this relates to the general public- in 'real life', so to speak- including whether or not an increased presence of diverse families in the media leads to an increased acceptance of these families; if this presence is actually helping or hurting these communities, or are we just feeding into stereotypes; and finally how diversity varies culturally, and how this may relate to levels of acceptance and levels of presence in the media. The theory behind our topic is that when you see something more and more, you become used to it, and it becomes normal to you. Thus, if you see more and more diversity in families in the media, it will so become normal, and more people will become accepting of it.
The layout of this blog will consist of various topics, including same sex families, interracial families, and single parent families. We will also address the cultural differences concerning diversity in families, and conclude with an analysis of whether or not an increased presence in the media affects the public's view of an acceptable family.
